Captain Clive starts with a win

MARYPORT Golf Club’s new captains, Clive Johnston and Sherry Stokoe, had an excellent day to start the new season.
Over 65 members played in the traditional captain v vice captain match.
The result was a narrow win for Johnston whose team just edged out that of vice captain Eddie Varah.
The ladies section produced a draw between Stokoe's team against lady vice captain Serena Varah.
At the end of a long wet winter the course was in superb condition and despite the very windy and wet weather many matches produced close finishes with a good standard of golf.
The golf was followed by an egg dump organised by the social committee. It was won by Anthony Brough who defeated Billy Mossom in a tension packed final.
Social committee member Jimmy Wood also arranged a Ryder Cup quiz won by Margaret Gunson.
The club is always keen to welcome new members, including juniors who enjoyed a similar opening day of their own the previous week.
Anyone interested in joining should contact the clubhouse.
Easter Monday also saw the club hosting the County Junior Tournament when Maryport finished a very creditable third in what at times were Arctic conditions.
