A semi-professional footballer who beat up his ex girlfriend after she took another man home following a night out in Carlisle has been sent to prison for 28 months.
Jonathan “Jonny” Jamieson, who played in goal for Annan Athletic, found out that Lynette Banks had gone home drunk with Carl Algeo, whom she met in one of the bars and clubs she visited on July 10.
So, after sending her a text warning her that Mr Algeo was “a dead man”, he went round to her house in the small hours of the morning to confront them both, the Carlisle Crown Court heard.
He got into the house after banging and shouting at the door, then repeatedly punched and slapped Mr Algeo once inside.
Then he threw a heavy pan across the kitchen, smashing a hole in the ceiling, and grabbed Ms Banks by the arms and flung her to the floor.
He continued smashing glasses and crockery in the kitchen and chased Ms Banks upstairs – ripping a baby gate off its mountings in the process, the court heard.
Jamieson eventually left, but in his anger smashed a window of neighbour Simon Bond’s car.
Ms Banks suffered bruising and cuts to her feet, after treading on the broken glass.
Prosecuting counsel Brendan Burke told the court it was the second time Jamieson, of Heron Drive, Botcherby, had been in court for violence sparked by his jealousy.
He had previously been given a suspended prison sentence for stamping and kicking a man who had a sexual relationship with an ex girlfriend, he said.
Jamieson pleaded guilty to causing her actual bodily harm.
Defence barrister David Birrell said that, while Ms Banks believed her “on-off relationship” with Jamieson was over, Jamieson had thought they were still “very much together”. He told the court: “It came as a surprise to him to find that she had gone home with another man that night.”
He said: “When he is not getting into trouble there is good in him.”
Judge Paul Batty QC described the incident as “a disgraceful episode”.
He jailed Jamieson for 27 months for the assault on Ms Banks, and also ordered him to serve one month – consecutively – of the sentence which had previously been suspended.
