Ruth Edge stars in the first of Hutton's international trials

The star of the show at the first of the year’s three Hutton-in-the-Forest International Horse Trials was undoubtedly Ruth Edge who won two of the BE100 sections, on Bojack and Opposition Elite.

She then rode the five-year-old stallion Mister MacCondy to victory in his first ever Novice, then took the Intermediate honours on Master Zero.

Ruth very nearly made it five out of five with Schiehallion who was doing his first ever CIC One-star class. The pair turned in the best dressage score but were dropped to third by eight showjumping faults.

Hesket Newmarket’s Denise Richardson won the new BE80(T) class with her youngster Bordergrove Arizona, then took fourth in the BE100 on Glamorous, and second in the Novice on Velica, a single fence in the showjumping standing between her and first place.

Elizabeth Butterworth from Appleby came third in her Novice section with Adiva, and sixth in the BE100 with The Wee Man, going clear after dressage on both horses. Jannet Bowness and Mondello Park was ninth in the Novice with Josh Thompson and Viander in 13th.

One of Cumbria’s most consistently successful riders, Claire Garlick took second place in the BE100 with Redcotts Splash just ahead of Blackdyke Riding Centre owner John Collier on Lowmoor Lancaster.

Amy Dixon, who won the BE90 Grassroots section at Badminton with Maid In Holland, claimed fifth place in their section of the BE100, as did Katherine Miller and Gernant Cardigan Bay, and Rosie Wade with Dyke Nook Mackenzie.

Sarah Graham came eighth with Patriot Games and Susie Blundell ninth in the BE100 Open with Hey Carr Dancer

Katie Heginbotham and Midnight View proved unbeatable in the BE90, going clear after an amazing dressage score of 19, while Sarah Brockbank and Riversleigh came third and Liz Mather came sixth with Bravour.

Katherine King and Whineray Beach Boy came second in the BE80, Claire Knoery and Solway View were fifth, Catherine Harrington and Shenandoah Mendulai came seventh and Alda Banister with Perry Creek came tenth.

The sun shone for the CFHS annual spring competition at Brougham and there were a record number of entries for all the classes with competitors coming from as far afield as Newcastle. It included a Burghley Event Pony qualifier, with successful riders going on to the finals in September.

Competitors had to do a short dressage test and round of jumps and ponies were judged for conformation.

The Cumbria Cup Pony Club mounted games competition held at Tarns near Aspatria, saw some terrific sport.

The juniors section was decided by nail biting sack race after the first round left them level and victory went to Cumberland Foxhounds with Cumberland Farmers South runners up.

In the senior competition Foxhounds went ahead from the start after both Wyndham and Farmers South were eliminated for broken poles in the bending race.

After that Foxhounds proved uncatchable and went on to win with Wyndham in second and Farmers South in third.

Foxhounds now compete at Newark in the Prince Phillip Cup Mounted Games zone final, with the winning team going to HOYS, so all fingers and toes crossed for them.

Cumbria Riding Club members had to grin and bear it when it rained throughout their showjumping day, leaving competitors, spectators and organisers soaked to the skin.

BSJA course builder Geoff Maddocks set out the course and acted as judge. Schoolmaster Magic Max guided John Antins to some admirable placings, Nikky Heal and Emily Cottam took two red ribbons apiece, with David Hilton and Laura Straughton both coming in a close second in their respective classes.
