Supermarket car wash damaged my car, claims Cumbrian man

A Workington man says he is devastated after a car bought for him as a birthday present was badly damaged in a supermarket car wash.

Paul Hodgson, 50, of Seaton, went through Morrisons’ car wash in the town, expecting it to come out sparkling clean.

Instead, the washing mechanism ripped the rear spoiler off his car and left him with a £400 bill.

Mr Hodgson said: “The first time through the wash stopped and someone fixed it. Then the next time it jammed under the back of my car and ripped the spoiler off.

“They came out and locked the car wash down. The manager apologised but they told me to read the disclaimer.

“I complained on the phone to a woman at the store and she told me to let it lie and said ‘I’d like to end this conversation’ and then put the phone down.

“Their attitude was disgusting.”

The Rover Classic was a birthday present to Mr Hodgson from his wife. The damage was caused earlier this month.

He added: “I’ve had an old car for years, but then my wife went and got me this for my birthday.

“You make do with old cars for years, then you get a decent one and this happens.”

Although annoyed about the money, Mr Hodgson said that he was concerned about the safety of other users of the car wash.

The incident is not the only one to have happened at Morrisons’ Workington car wash.

Last February, Town Croft residents Leona Wallace and her partner Tony Johnstone went through the car wash in their Citroën C5, only for it to crush the boot, damage the roof and smash the back window, showering the couple with broken glass.

The couple said they were left with a £2,400 bill.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “There is a set procedure in place for each store to follow and we ask the customer to put any claim in writing.

“Our insurance department will take all factors into account before making a careful and informed decision based on the details provided by both the store and the customer.”

Have your say

In Feb 2012 my daughter took our Ford KA to auto machine Morrisons Thirsk which resulted in deep parallel scrapes to both rear wings of the vehicle the scrapes have indented and are appx 2 inches thick. Morrisons have refused liability throughout numerous correspondence and eventually sent an so called independent assessor to examine the vehicle. He said damage not caused by brushes and in his opinion not caused by machine. i have commenced small claims against Morrisons over £1200 damage. Can anyone help are any experts out there who can say what part of machine has caused this damage. Also I am trying to collate as many instances of similar damage where Morrisons have fobbed people off thanks to anyone who can help
